Yalda Night Celebration, the longest night of year

While Christians around the world get ready to celebrate Christmas on the eve of December 25th, Iranians hold another festival on the eve of December 21st. Shab-e Yalda or Shab-e Cheleh is the name of this celebration.

 

Yalda Night History :

In Zoroastrian and ancient Iranian traditions, the winter solstice with the longest night of the year was an auspicious day.

On Yalda festival, Iranians celebrate the arrival of winter, the renewal of the sun and the victory of light over darkness. Considered the longest night of the year, Yalda is the night when ancient Iranians celebrated the birth of Mithra, the goddess of light.

What are Iranians doing at Yalda Night?

Yalda is a time when friends and family gather together to eat and read poetry (especially Hafez) until well after midnight. Fruits and nuts are eaten and pomegranates and watermelons are particularly significant.

Reciting poetry, reading epic stories especially from Shahnameh (the book of legendary and epic poetry by Ferdowsi), Visiting the grandfather or the eldest person in the family, Playing Persian classical music are some of activities in this night.

In addition to Iran, Central Asian countries such as Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and some Caucasian states such as Azerbaijan and Armenia share the same tradition and celebrate Yalda Night annually at this time of the year.
